| Lynda Schneider Granatstein was born in Montreal in
1954. She began her studies in art at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts
with Arthur Lismer, a member of the Group of Seven (1967-1970),
continuing with Concordia University (1972, 1980) and the Saidye
Bronfman Centre (1976-1979, 1987-1989), where she specialized in etching
techniques and collagraph making. Concurrently, she recieved her B.A.
(Psychology) in 1976 and her Masters in Education (Psychological
Counselling) in 1979 from McGill University and continued with a
specialization in Short-Term Dynamic Psychotherapy at the Montreal
General Hospital in 1980. Her recent professional development studies
include photo etching technique with Dorcen Lindsay, S.B.C. (1993), and
pastel and oil portrait technique with Daniel Greene, N.A., New Jersey
(1996), as well as traditional Balinese painting technique by Ubud
master painter, Ketut Parmita, of Bali (2001).
The artist teaches weekly mixed media workshops in her studio in Old
Montreal, is a faculty member of the Saidye Bronfman Centre (collage
workshops) and a guest lecturer for Professor Barbara Galli, PhD.,
"Religion and the Arts" (260-345A), McGill and Concordia Universities.
She is also asked to speak at cultural functions and events as well as
arts symposiums.
Schneider Granatstein's work as a therapist and her interest in
Freudian theory combine with her skills as a painter and printmaker to
produce mixed media work of psychological insight in human dynamics. Her
technique, developed over 25 years, combines collagraphs and metal plate
etchings with free drawing and painting. Recently, she has relied
heavily on collaging handmade Japanese papers and vintage photographs
with pastels and oil paint. The support for these mixed media works is
either canvas or handmade paper from St. Armand's paper factory in
Montreal. Her recent works focus figuratively (primarily through nudes,
kimono-draped figures, ballerinas, flowers and personal antique
artifacts) and symbolically on the elements of the psyche (through
"stream-of-consciousness" handwritten text). She has had the privilege
of working behind the scenes with the Grands Ballets Canadiens for a
good period of time, the dancers becoming her models, and has become the
artistic collaborator of an emerging company named Da Da Danse.
She has had 16 solo shows and participated in over 70 group and
juried exhibitions. Some of the artist's professional affiliations are:
the Saidye Bronfman Printmaking Atelier, the Arts Club of Montreal, the
Conseil de la Peinture du Québec, CARFAC (Canadian Artists'
Representation) and RAAVC (Regroupement des Artistes en Arts visuels du
Québec). |
