One Painting,
Two Mouldings
You now look
at a painting that is framed in two different ways. This work of
Louis Boekhout is entitled "Nostalgie" and its dimensions are 8" by
6". It is an oil painting on wood.
The framing
does not make the artwork but it influences the tone of some
colours.
In the
example on the left, the outside moulding measures 2½". Its dark
colour amplifies the force of the tree behind the small building.
The 2-inch Marie-Louise is made of very white cotton and is tilted,
which contributes to give depth to the landscape. The gilded lip
(small interior moulding) which embraces the artwork leads us
directly to the heart of the subject and creates a pleasant
reference to the gilded tone found in the moulding. The whole
gives a strong and dramatic work.
In the
example on the right, the effect of the framing is very
different. First of all the moulding is not as broad, it measures
1¾" and is slightly tilted. The Marie-Louise is also tilted, is made
of cream cotton and measures 1" only. The two elements together
(moulding and Marie-Louise) create a calm effect of warmth and
depth. The silver and copper tones of the moulding harmonize well
with the landscape lit by a cloudy sky, which is more obvious in
this case. Then the snow brings a light that leads our eye to the
dominant part of the work, the barn and the tree. Note the warm
tones much more visible with this framing. The result is a calmer
and more peaceful work.
With some 800 mouldings
available at the gallery we can create framings to any particular
taste and framings that will enhance your paintings.
We say in
our advertising "Expert Framer Since 1980"; it does'nt make the
framer younger but it confirms his expertise.
